NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home

This course is ideal for individuals who have a concealed carry permit and want to develop the skills and experience necessary to safely and effectively carry a handgun for self-defense.  The course teaches safe and effective means of carrying a concealed handgun.  Safe and effective means of drawing a handgun from concealment.  Shooting skills including, moving to cover, use of cover and concealment, sitting to standing, turning, low-light, dealing with common firearm stoppages and malfunctions, etc.

Course Goal:
To develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, and responsible use of a handgun for self-defense outside the home.

Course Pre-requisites:  Successful completion of NRA Personal Protection in the Home Course or successfully passing the PPOTH pre-course assessment.

Course Length:  14 hours (min)      Cost:  $200

What the Student Needs to Bring to Class

  • A handgun in good working order.
    • Recommended are either double action revolvers or semi-automatics
    • Recommended minimum caliber is 38 special or 9mm.
    • NO magnum ammo allowed (i.e. 357 mag, 44mag, 357 Sig).
  • (2) speed loaders for revolvers or minimum (2) magazines for semi-autos.
  • (250) rounds of Factory New Ammo.
    (no reloaded or remanufactured ammo allowed)
  • Ear & Eye Protection.
  • Concealment Garment (vest, jacket, sportcoat, etc.)
  • Either Strong side, outside the waistband holster or holster purse.
    • Holster must securely hold the gun.
    • Waistband holsters must allow for safe & easy one handed reholstering.
    • Waistband holsters must be secured by means of a belt.
    • NO tactical holsters allowed.
    • NO competition holsters allowed.
  • Ball Cap
  • Note pad & pen/pencil.
  • Optional Items
    • Spare magazine or speed loader pouch.
    • Knee pads
    • Lunch
    • Water/Pop/Snacks
